Context:

At the Civil Lines police station in Patiala, a First Information Report (FIR) was submitted against Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, the MLA for the Sanour constituency.

He faces accusations of criminal intimidation, cheating, and rape.

The Zirakpur woman who filed the complaint claimed that the MLA, who was already married, had lied about being divorced in order to get into a relationship with her and finally marry her in 2021. She has accused him of mailing “obscene” material, threatening her, and sexually exploiting her.

The Escape and Arrest Attempt:

Under the direction of DSP Vikramjit Barad, a team from the Punjab Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) travelled to Karnal, Haryana, to apprehend Pathanmajra, who was lodging at a relative’s home in Dabri village.

After arriving in the village late at night, the police team started reviewing the CCTV tape.

A major altercation broke out during the arrest attempt, according to the police. At least two police officers were injured when villagers and MLA supporters allegedly threw stones and fired bullets at the police force.

Pathanmajra took advantage of the confusion and drove off in an SUV. He and his supporters reportedly left in two cars, including a Fortuner, according to police officials. One of the SUVs allegedly struck a police officer who attempted to block the cars.

Although the MLA was able to flee in a single car, one of his collaborators, Balwinder Singh, was apprehended by the police, and three firearms were taken from him. The Fortuner used in the escape was later confiscated by the police as well.

Political Background and Accusations:

A significant political debate has been triggered by the incident. The MLA had recently turned into a strong opponent of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), his own party.

Publicly criticising the state government’s flood response, Pathanmajra charged that the Delhi-based party’s central leadership was “illegitimately ruling over Punjab”.

He claimed that he was the target of “revenge politics” in the rape case and that the FIR was only filed against him after he criticised the leadership of his party.

Additionally, he asserted that police officers in his area had been relocated and that his security had been revoked in reprisal.

The AAP government has been accused by the BJP of failing to address the woman’s complaint for three years and only “waking up” to the situation after Pathanmajra expressed disapproval of the party’s leadership.

Present Situation:

A manhunt has been started, and police are still looking for Pathanmajra.

According to reports, the MLA has turned off his cell phone.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had previously granted Pathanmajra bail in the case, according to the MLA’s brother, Hardev Singh, who has stated that the arrest was an attempt to silence him for “speaking the truth”.
