Shubhanshu Shukla, the second Indian astronaut in space, lands in Delhi for his homecoming.
The first Indian to visit the ISS and the second Indian to be sent to space has returned to his native country.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, the aircraft carrying Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who splashed down off the coast of California on July 15, returned to Earth.
His family, Jitendra Singh, the minister of science and technology, Rekha Gupta, the chief minister of Delhi, and a sizable crowd waving the flag met him at the airport.
The pilot for the Axiom-4 mission, which took off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on June 25 and landed at the International Space Station on June 26, was Group Captain Shukla. In preparation for the assignment, he had spent a year in the United States.
With Gaganyaan, which is scheduled to fly in 2027, India’s aspirations for human spaceflight would benefit greatly from the astronaut’s lessons learnt throughout the voyage and at the NASA, Axiom, and SpaceX facilities. India also wants to send a crewed expedition to the moon by 2040 and build a Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station) by 2035.

PM Gathering On August 23, Group Captain Shukla is scheduled to participate in the National Space Day celebrations and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had made reference to him in his Independence Day speech. “Shubhanshu Shukla, our group captain, has returned from the space station. Speaking on India’s plans for its own space station, PM Modi had stated in his speech at the Red Fort that “he is coming back to India in the coming days.” For India’s upcoming missions, the PM had also requested that the astronaut record his training, lessons learned, and time spent in the ISS. Group Captain Shukla’s mission will also be discussed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, according to sources, as part of a special debate on the space program’s critical role in ensuring that India is a developed country by 2047. “I am experiencing a range of emotions as I sit on the plane to return to India. Leaving behind a wonderful group of people who have become my friends and family for the past year throughout this mission makes me sad. Meeting my friends, family, and the entire nation for the first time after the mission excites me as well. “I suppose this is life—everything at once,” wrote Group Captain Shukla.
Everyone’s kindness and support during and after the trip were amazing, and I am so excited to return to India and tell you everything about my experiences. Saying goodbye is difficult, but we must continue living. Peggy Whitson, my commander, likes to comment that “the only constant in spaceflight is change.” I think that’s true in life too,” he continued.
“Keep at it, traveller; life is like a vehicle and time is the wheel,” he wrote as a parting quote from the song “Yun Hi Chala Chal” from the movie “Swades”. “Very Excited” Shubhanshu His arrival was also keenly anticipated by Shukla’s family, who are situated in Lucknow and attended festivities to see his launch and landing. “I am ecstatic. My son’s task has been accomplished. The return of my son has us giddy with anticipation. Earlier in the day, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, the father of Group Captain Shukla, told news agency IANS, “We are trying to meet him as soon as possible… we will meet him in Delhi.”
