The Punjab Assembly has called on the public to submit suggestions for a new law against the desecration of holy books. Citizens have until August 31 to send their recommendations. These suggestions will be reviewed by a select committee formed to draft the legislation which aims to ensure strict punishment for acts of disrespect toward sacred texts.
There are four ways to submit your suggestions:
1. Through your local MLA – Give your suggestion directly to the MLA of your constituency.
2. WhatsApp – Send a message to 80544 95560
3. Email – Use either of the following email addresses:
[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
4. Phone/Post – For more information or postal submissions, contact the Punjab Vidhan Sabha at 0172-2740786
Suggestions are accepted in four languages – Punjabi, Hindi, English, and Urdu.
The select committee will consider inputs from the general public, religious institutions, NGOs, experts, scholars and civil society. Meetings will be held every Tuesday to discuss the progress and finalize the draft. The committee has been given six months to complete the legislation but public suggestions are only open for one month.
This initiative aims to involve all sections of society in shaping a strong law to prevent the desecration of religious scriptures.
