The Punjab and Haryana High Court has postponed the hearing on a petition challenging the arrest of former Punjab minister and Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. His lawyers have been given four weeks to make changes to the petition. The next hearing is now scheduled for August 26.
Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau on June 25 in Amritsar. He is accused of owning assets that do not match his known sources of income.
This is not the first case against him. In 2021 under the Congress government, a case was filed against him under the NDPS Act (related to drugs). So far six statements have been recorded in that case including from a former Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate and a former Punjab DGP.
Raids have also been conducted at his properties in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
Majithia’s lawyers say the case is politically motivated and has no strong legal basis. However the government says it has solid evidence against him.
In a separate move his lawyers have requested live streaming of the hearings in the Mohali court arguing that many people in Punjab and abroad are interested in the case.
