A hearing will be held today July 29 in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on a petition challenging the arrest of Bikram Singh Majithia a senior leader of Shiromani Akali Dal and former Punjab minister. Majithia is currently in Nabha jail.
He was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau from Amritsar on June 25 in a case related to disproportionate assets — meaning he is accused of having more property and wealth than his known income.
In an earlier hearing Majithia’s lawyers had asked for time to make changes to their petition which the court allowed.
This is not the first case against Majithia. In 2021 when the Congress government was in power, he was also booked under the NDPS (drugs) law. So far six people have given statements in the case, including Majithia’s former personal assistant, a former Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and former DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay.
Raids related to this case have been conducted in Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
The government says it has strong evidence against Majithia but his lawyers argue that the case is weak and politically motivated. They claim that although the government talks tough in public it fails to present solid arguments in court.
Majithia’s legal team has also requested that the case hearings be live-streamed instead of being held behind closed doors. They say people in Punjab and abroad are interested in knowing the truth.
