SGPC Condemns Discrimination, Launches Langar Service, Demands Release of Sikh Prisoners

After a recent meeting in Amritsar the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) made several important announcements, addressing Sikh rights, community service and religious concerns.

Sikh Student Denied Exam Entry Condemned

The SGPC strongly condemned an incident in Rajasthan where a Sikh student was reportedly not allowed to appear for a judicial exam because they were wearing Kakaars (Sikh articles of faith). SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami called this a violation of constitutional rights and said the SGPC would file an official protest with the Rajasthan government.

Daily Langar at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital

The SGPC has decided to send daily langar from Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) to patients and their families at Amritsar’s Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. This step aims to support people in need and promote the Sikh value of seva (selfless service).

 

Demand for Release of Sikh Prisoners

The SGPC repeated its demand for the release of long-jailed Sikh prisoners, known as Bandi Singhs. Dhami criticized the central government for not keeping its earlier promise made during Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th birth anniversary. He also accused the Aam Aadmi Party of delaying the release of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar.

Other Important Announcements –

Kartarpur Corridor:

The SGPC has requested the government to simplify travel to Kartarpur Sahib by removing the $20 fee and allowing Aadhaar cards instead of passports.

Threats to SGPC Officials:

Over a dozen SGPC officials have received threatening emails. Dhami said security forces have been alerted and action has been requested.

Coaching Academy for Sikh Students:

A new academy has been opened in Fatehgarh Sahib, named after Jathedar Giani Jagtar Singh Tohra, to help Sikh students prepare for exams like UPSC. Out of 1,200 applicants, 600 have been selected.

Guru Granth Sahib Saroops for Hazur Sahib:

The SGPC will send 200 *Saroops (copies) of Guru Granth Sahib to Hazur Sahib following a special request.

Sikh Traditions Violated in Srinagar:

The SGPC condemned violations of Sikh traditions in Srinagar and appealed to the Akal Takht to take strict action against those responsible.

These decisions reflect SGPC’s continued efforts to protect Sikh values support the community, and raise important social and religious issues.
