On Monday several MPs from the INDIA bloc, including top Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, protested in the Parliament House complex. They opposed the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar and demanded that it be withdrawn.
Before the Parliament session began, leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Derek O’Brien and Sagarika Ghose (TMC), and Kanimozhi and A Raja (DMK) gathered at the Makar Dwar of Parliament.
They held placards that said Stop SIR and stood near a large banner reading SIR – Attack on Democracy. This was their fifth day of protest on the issue.
Leaders from Congress, DMK, TMC, RJD, Samajwadi Party, and Left parties joined the protest shouting slogans against the revision of the voter list.
The opposition claims that the Election Commission’s move could remove many voters in Bihar and affect the upcoming Assembly elections. They are demanding a full discussion on the issue in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
