Punjab politics have become heated again. Former Gurdaspur MP and ex-Deputy Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government of targeting political opponents unfairly. In a Facebook post Amarinder Singh said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is using political revenge and chasing cheap popularity.
He also said that the action taken against senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in the drugs case is inhumane. According to him, protests are being stopped voices of opposition are being silenced, and the state is being run like a mafia from Delhi. He claimed that both the Guru and the people of Punjab will never forgive those responsible for sacrilege and the drug problem.
Amarinder also accused AAP of making false charges and arresting peaceful protesters. He said that earlier he had worked with Akali leaders on serious issues like sacrilege and drugs.
This statement sparked a strong reaction from the Punjab government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann called Captain Amarinder Singh double-faced. Mann said that during Amarinder and his nephew’s time in power Punjab’s youth were dying because of drugs, while they were busy with parties and private events.
Mann also reminded Amarinder Singh of his 2017 election promise to end the drug problem in four weeks. He added that Amarinder is now suddenly concerned about the human rights of drug smugglers, which shows his hypocrisy. “The people of Punjab have suffered, but now they have understood the truth,” CM Mann said.
