Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government rescued 20 children from begging on July 23, 2025, through special operations across 15 districts. The operation was part of Project Jeevanjot 2.0 a campaign to protect children from exploitation.
Social Security, Women, and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said that District Child Protection Units (DCPUs) carried out searches at 29 locations in places like Barnala, Bathinda, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Mansa, Malerkotla, Moga, Patiala, and Rupnagar.
Out of the 20 children rescued, nine were safely reunited with their families. Six children were sent to child care homes for protection and support, while documents of the remaining five are still being checked.
Dr. Kaur shared that no DNA tests or police cases were needed at this stage, but DNA testing may be done if required later. She said the operation was successful, and no child begging was reported in the areas after the raids.
The Minister also warned that strict legal action would be taken against any guardians who force children to beg. She urged the public to report child begging cases to the Child Helpline at 1098.
In the last seven days, 169 children have been rescued under Project Jeevanjot 2.0, showing the state’s strong commitment to protecting child rights and ensuring their education and better future.
