In Fatehgarh Sahib today, farmers tried to question Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rupinder Singh Happy. However, before they could reach him, the police detained six farmers. The protest took place in Gopalon village of Bassi Pathana, where the MLA had come to attend a program.
The farmers were planning to ask the MLA some questions about the government’s policies. But police stopped them by putting up barricades near the event venue. When the farmers tried to cross the barricades, they were taken into custody and brought to Bassi Pathana police station.
The protest was part of a call given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha after removing their protests from Khanauri and Shambhu borders. They had announced that they would now ask questions to Punjab ministers and MLAs directly.
Bassi Pathana SHO Suresh Kumar refused to comment on the incident.
A few days ago, a similar situation happened in Abdulapur village, where protesting farmers were sent to Nabha jail. They were released on Monday after they agreed not to protest again. However, farmers have clearly said they are not afraid of jail or the government’s actions. One farmer leader said, We are not afraid to go to jail, and we will fight for our rights.
