NDRF Team in Ropar for Flood Preparedness and Mock Drill

A team from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) is staying in Ropar district for five days to understand the flood-prone areas of Punjab.

Deputy Commissioner of Ropar, Varjeet Singh Walia, said that the team is staying in Nangal town from July 21 to 25. They will study the flood plains of the area and hold a mock drill in Nangal on July 23.

The NDRF will also run awareness programs for the public and school children on how to stay safe during disasters.

Ropar district has flood plains around the Sutlej river and its tributaries. Although the Bhakra and Nangal dams control the Sutlej river, the Swan and Sirsa rivers still cause floods during heavy monsoons. These rivers can carry more than 1 lakh cusecs of water, which leads to flooding in nearby areas. Once this water enters the Sutlej, it increases the risk of flooding in areas downstream from Nangal dam.

Officials said the NDRF team is here to get first-hand knowledge of the flood zones so they can better handle rescue operations if needed.

This year, due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, the Ropar administration is on high alert and closely watching the situation. People living near the banks of the Sutlej, Swan, and Sirsa rivers are at greater risk if flooding occurs.
