Amritsar has improved its cleanliness rank in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, moving up to the 30th position in ਭਾਰਤ. This is a small improvement from last year when the ਸ਼ਹਿਰ was ranked 32nd. The survey is done every year by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to check how clean cities are across the country.
Amritsar is in the category of cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. In the past five years, the ਸ਼ਹਿਰ’s rank has slowly improved:
39th in 2019-20
34th in 2020-21
32nd in 2021-22
However, in 2022-23, after changes in the ranking system, Amritsar fell to 142nd position. Since then, the ਸ਼ਹਿਰ has worked hard to improve cleanliness and waste management. This year, it reached the 30th position.
Amritsar also received the Water+ certification. This means the ਸ਼ਹਿਰ is successfully treating wastewater and is not letting dirty water flow into rivers or drains. The ਸ਼ਹਿਰ is also reusing treated water in useful ways.
Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh said the achievement was possible because of regular cleanliness drives, better garbage disposal, public support, and use of modern waste management systems.
Dr. Kiran Kumar, the Health Officer, said the ਸ਼ਹਿਰ will keep working to improve toilets, public awareness, and community support so that Amritsar can do even better in the future.
