Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, has asked for a judicial commission to be set up to look into the rise in gangster activities since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in 2022.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Bajwa said the commission should be led by a High Court judge and should find out how gangsters are operating from inside jails.
Bajwa, who is a senior Congress leader, made this demand after attending a prayer meeting for Abohar businessman Sanjay Verma, who was recently killed.
Bajwa also wrote a letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. In it, he asked for discussions on two important topics during the last two days of the special Assembly session — the worsening law and order situation and the state’s land pooling policy.
He reminded the Speaker that the session was extended based on a promise that both issues would be discussed. However, there is still no confirmation if these discussions will happen.
Bajwa also raised concern about the anti-sacrilege law, which was the main reason for calling the special session. He said the law is still in the drafting stage and urged the AAP government to give a clear update.
