NHAI to Blacklist ‘Loose FASTags’ to Ensure Smooth Toll Collection

To ensure smoother toll operations and reduce misuse, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday announced stricter rules for handling ‘loose FASTags’ — tags that are not properly affixed to vehicles.

In a statement, NHAI said that with new systems like annual passes and multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling being introduced, it is important to ensure FASTag authenticity and system reliability. “Loose FASTags”, often referred to as “tag-in-hand,” are being used by some vehicle owners to avoid detection or misuse the tolling system.

“Such users do not stick the FASTag on their windscreen as required, causing lane congestion, fake chargebacks, and disruptions in toll operations,” NHAI said. This behavior not only creates delays at toll plazas but also inconveniences other road users.

To tackle this, NHAI has asked all toll-collecting agencies and highway concessionaires to report such cases immediately through a dedicated email ID. Once reported, NHAI will take quick action to blacklist or block those FASTags.

The move is aimed at maintaining the integrity of the electronic toll collection system and ensuring hassle-free travel for all National Highway users.
