A newly opened café owned by popular Indian comedian Kapil Sharma was attacked on Wednesday night in Surrey, British Columbia, just days after it launched on July 4. The café, named Kap’s Cafe, was targeted in a shocking act of gunfire.
According to local police, a man sitting in a parked car fired at least nine bullets into the front window of the café. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the property was damaged. Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage and bullet evidence as part of their investigation.
The attack has been claimed by Harjit Singh Laddi, a Khalistani terrorist based in Germany. He is linked to the banned group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and is listed among India’s most wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Reports suggest Laddi ordered the attack in retaliation for a past comment made by Kapil Sharma that he found offensive. He is also accused in other terror-related cases, including the April 2024 killing of a VHP leader.
After the incident, Kap’s Cafe shared a message on Instagram expressing their sadness and determination. They wrote that the café was started to bring joy and community through coffee and conversation, and the violence was heartbreaking. However, they said they would not give up.
The café also thanked supporters for their encouraging messages and appreciated the quick response of Surrey and Delta Police in handling the situation and ensuring safety.
They ended their post with a message of unity and hope, using the hashtag #SupportKapsCafeCanada.
