Jaishankar Holds Key Meetings with Russia, Iran, and Mexico at BRICS Summit

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held important meetings with the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, and Mexico on Sunday during the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil.

In his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Jaishankar discussed key topics such as India-Russia relations, developments in West Asia, as well as cooperation within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

“Good to meet with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of #BRICS2025,” Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He also met Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, where the two leaders talked about recent regional developments. “Glad to meet FM @araghchi of Iran this evening,” Jaishankar posted, noting that the conversation focused on the situation in the Middle East region.

Later, Jaishankar met Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Their discussion focused on strengthening the partnership between India and Mexico in areas like healthcare, digital technology, space, and innovation.

These meetings took place on the sidelines of the expanded BRICS Summit, which now includes 11 member countries. BRICS has grown into a powerful international group, representing nearly half the world’s population, about 40% of global GDP, and 26% of global trade.

Originally formed with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, with Indonesia joining in 2025.

The summit has brought together leaders and foreign ministers to discuss global cooperation, economic development, regional conflicts, and the need for a more balanced world order.
