Russia has officially recognised the Taliban government in Afghanistan. This is the first time any country has formally done so since the Taliban took control in 2021.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said it received official documents from Afghanistan’s new Ambassador, Gul Hassan Hassan. They believe this move will help build strong cooperation between the two countries.
Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry called this a historic moment. Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said it sets a good example for other countries to follow.
The Taliban came to power in August 2021 after US and NATO forces left Afghanistan. Since then, they have been trying to get recognition from the world. Although they have spoken to many countries like China and the UAE, no one had officially recognised them until now.
However, the Taliban have faced criticism for limiting women’s rights. Women are not allowed to work in most jobs or visit public places like parks or gyms. Girls are also banned from studying after Class 6.
Even with these restrictions, Russia has said it’s important to work with the Taliban to bring stability to Afghanistan. In April, Russia removed the Taliban from its list of banned organisations.
Russia’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, said this decision was made by President Vladimir Putin after advice from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He said it shows Russia’s wish to build a strong relationship with Afghanistan.
