SGPC Releases Picture Book on 1984 Attack, Captures Damage to Golden Temple and Akal Takht

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has released a photo book that documents the heavy losses suffered by the Golden Temple and Akal Takht during the 1984 military operation known as Operation Bluestar.

Dhami said the June 1984 attack is one of the most painful chapters in Sikh history. He said the government’s military action on the holiest Sikh shrines left a deep and permanent scar on the Sikh community. Apart from loss of lives and emotional trauma, many invaluable religious items — including historical documents and artefacts from the Sikh Reference Library — were also destroyed.

The photographs featured in the book were taken by artist and photographer Satpal Singh Danish during the operation. These powerful images show the destruction and violence that took place at the time.

The picture book will be available at several key locations including the SGPC headquarters, Sikh Reference Library, Golden Temple’s Information Centre, and the Central Sikh Museum. It will also be digitized to reach a wider audience and help educate the Sangat (devotees) about the tragic events of June 1984.
