Congress Rift Widens in Punjab Over Re-Induction of Two Leaders

The Punjab Congress is facing internal conflict after the party’s top state body, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), rejected the re-induction of two leaders—Kamaljit Singh Karwal from Atam Nagar and Karan Warring from Dakha. Both had joined the party again before the Ludhiana Assembly bypoll, which ended in a loss for the Congress.

State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring strongly opposed their return, saying they were not even official members of the party and had campaigned against him during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Warring had contested from Ludhiana and won that election.

The re-induction of these leaders has deepened the divide within the Punjab Congress. Rival leaders like former CM Charanjit Singh Channi and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh reportedly supported the move, which Warring sees as a challenge to his leadership.

Sources say the proper procedure was not followed in their rejoining, and it happened without the approval of AICC Punjab incharge Bhupesh Baghel or PPCC president Warring.

This latest controversy has added fuel to the ongoing internal battle in the party. The Ludhiana bypoll campaign had already shown signs of division, with Channi, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Pargat Singh, and Kushaldeep Dhillon reportedly sidelining Warring and other leaders while campaigning for Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

After the party’s defeat in the bypoll, several senior leaders resigned from their posts, and now the Congress high command is planning to meet Punjab leaders individually to understand the root of the factionalism.

Some leaders are demanding a proper ground-level survey to assess the popularity of various community leaders, including Hindu, Dalit, and Jat faces, to guide future leadership decisions.
