Bikram Majithia Challenges Arrest in Corruption Case, Calls It Political Vendetta

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, calling his arrest by the Vigilance Bureau in a corruption case “illegal” and politically motivated.

Majithia was arrested from his Amritsar home on June 25 and sent to seven-day custody by a Mohali court the next day. In his petition, Majithia said the arrest violated legal procedures and was done to harass him because he is a strong critic of the current government.

He claimed he was kept in “illegal custody” for more than two hours before his official arrest at 11:20 am, and this breaks the rules that require a person to be brought before a magistrate within 24 hours. The petition also said the remand order was full of vague reasons and failed to follow court rules, with no solid proof provided for keeping him in custody.

Majithia also pointed out that the Supreme Court had earlier denied custodial interrogation in the same case and had only asked him to cooperate with the investigation, which he said he did fully.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a team from the Vigilance Bureau raided Majithia’s office in Amritsar’s Majitha area under heavy security. They are investigating allegations that he laundered ₹540 crore of drug money and collected wealth beyond his known income sources.

The area around his office was barricaded, and even his wife, MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia, was not allowed inside. She called the raid “illegal” and said that similar raids had already been conducted at their other homes in Amritsar, Majitha, and Chandigarh.
