Channi Offers to Help Vigilance Bureau in Majithia Corruption Case, Clarifies His Stand

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi said on Monday that he is ready to appear before the Vigilance Bureau (VB) as a witness in the corruption case against arrested SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia.

Channi, who is now the Jalandhar MP, made this statement after facing criticism for allegedly “supporting” Majithia. Social media users accused him of going soft on the SAD leader.

Clarifying his position, Channi said he fully supports the fight against drug abuse. He explained that his recent remarks were only about the way Majithia was arrested—not in defence of the leader himself. “My support was only regarding the manner of his arrest,” Channi said.

He also pointed out that the new FIR filed by the Vigilance Bureau against Majithia is based on the same points that were already raised when he was the Chief Minister. “Only two new lines were added in the FIR. It’s not really a new case,” he claimed.

Channi added that he is open to helping the Vigilance Bureau with any investigation against Majithia or any other person linked to drug crimes. However, he also noted that VB’s current case is about corruption, not drugs—because drug-related cases are outside the VB’s jurisdiction.

Despite this, Channi said he was unfairly trolled online as if he was trying to stop the fight against drugs. “I’ve always been committed to stopping drug abuse in Punjab,” he said.
