Maharashtra BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar stirred a controversy with his remarks at a public event in Partur, Jalna district. Speaking about the BJP-led government’s welfare schemes, he told critics of his party that the clothes, shoes, mobile phones, and monetary benefits they receive are all because of his party.
At a function promoting the ‘Har Ghar Solar’ scheme, Lonikar highlighted various government benefits, saying, “We gave overhead water tanks, concrete roads, function halls and benefits of various government schemes in your village.” He went on to say that even the salaries and pensions for critics’ family members come from BJP efforts, adding that Prime Minister Modi provided Rs 6,000 to their fathers under a farming scheme.
A video of his speech went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve called Lonikar’s remarks “tasteless” and likened him to an “indigenous version of the British,” saying such language doesn’t belong in a democracy.
Danve reminded Lonikar that all his privileges—including his position, clothes, and vehicles—are thanks to the people, and warned that local body elections are coming soon, implying voters should keep these comments in mind.
The incident has fueled political tensions ahead of upcoming elections in Maharashtra.
