Nerti Village Celebrates Ashadh Saptami with Two-Day Parampara Utsav Honouring King Raj Singh

On the sacred occasion of Ashadh Saptami, the historic village of Nerti in Shahpur came alive with vibrant tradition, culture, and reverence during the two-day Parampara Utsav, held on June 20 and 21. The festival commemorated the martyrdom of Chamba’s brave King Raj Singh and celebrated the deep-rooted ties of unity, heritage, and valor between the former princely states of Chamba and Kangra.

Hosted at the Shiv Mandir and Raj Mandir Memorial complex, the festivities took place in a location steeped in legend and local pride. The fair originally began in 1798 as a platform for trade and cultural exchange. Though relocated to Rait town around 1950 for logistical reasons, the event lived on as the Dehra Mela, named after the “Dehri” stone memorial erected in memory of the fallen king.

At the heart of the celebration is the historic battle between King Raj Singh of Chamba and Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra, rooted in dynastic rivalry and spiritual devotion, particularly over the idol of Ghorka Devi and control of the Rehlu region. According to local lore, King Raj Singh continued fighting even after being beheaded, a moment etched in legend and artist Dhani Ram Khusdil’s painting, displayed near the temple.

Gautam Vyathith, a respected writer and cultural revivalist, played a key role in restoring the event. “Thanks to the Kangra Lok Sahitya Parishad, restoration began in 1975, reviving this sacred ground as a symbol of cultural pride,” he said.

The Parampara Utsav continues to bridge the past and present, preserving centuries-old traditions while paying homage to the courage and legacy of a legendary king.
