Hundreds Protest Liquor Shop Opening in Raj Nagar Colony, Women Demand Closure

Hundreds of residents, particularly women, gathered on Sunday to protest the opening of a liquor shop in their neighbourhood, citing safety concerns and disturbances caused by drunkards.

The protesters forcibly removed the shop’s salesman and locked the liquor store. Women expressed deep frustration, saying that the presence of the shop had led to frequent ruckus and abusive language, making the environment unsafe for women and children.

Alleging that the shop had fueled addiction in many nearby homes, the crowd demanded that the liquor shop be shifted elsewhere. One resident called for the immediate cancellation of the shop’s license. A woman protester highlighted that a temple was just 20 metres away and a satsang bhawan around 50 metres from the shop—places regularly visited by women and children who now feel uncomfortable due to the shop and the presence of intoxicated individuals.

Residents claimed they had previously raised the issue with the Deputy Commissioner, but no action had been taken to close the shop. “This will not be tolerated at any cost,” a protester warned.

Police arrived at the scene and attempted to calm the protesters, but the demand for shutting down the liquor shop remains firm
