Police have uncovered shocking details in the murder case of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known online as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, who had nearly 4 lakh followers on Instagram.
According to Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal, the crime was carefully planned and executed. The main accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, used a sports utility vehicle (SUV) bought from a man in Rohtak, Haryana. However, to avoid being traced, he never transferred the vehicle into his own name.
Police believe Amritpal and his accomplices used the SUV to visit Kanchan’s home in Ludhiana multiple times for a recce (surveillance) before the murder. On the day of the crime, they allegedly used a waistband to strangle her. In an attempt to cover their tracks, they tried to burn the waistband and then left her body in the back seat of her own car.
The car, with her decomposed body inside, was found parked near Adesh University in Bhucho Kalan, along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway, on the night of June 11.
The police say that after committing the crime, Amritpal fled to the UAE. His suspected associate, Ranjit Singh from Tarn Taran, and another unknown person are still on the run. However, two of their alleged accomplices, Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh, have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.
Investigators believe the motive behind the murder was “moral policing” – possibly linked to Kanchan’s online presence and lifestyle.
This disturbing case has raised serious concerns about personal safety and online harassment, as well as how some individuals take extreme steps under the guise of morality. Police are continuing the investigation and are working to trace the absconding accused.
