Voting Begins for Ludhiana West Bypoll After MLA Gogi’s Death

Voting started early this morning at 7 am in Ludhiana West for the by-election being held after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. Polling will continue until 6 pm today, and the votes will be counted on June 23.

Some voters arrived early to avoid the heat later in the day.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has chosen Rajya Sabha member and local industrialist Sanjeev Arora, 61, as its candidate. Arora is also known for his work in social welfare.

The Congress party has fielded 51-year-old Bharat Bhushan Ashu, a senior leader and former minister. Ashu has previously won this seat in 2012 and 2017 but lost to Gogi in the 2022 elections by over 7,500 votes.

The BJP is being represented by Jiwan Gupta, a senior party leader and former state general secretary. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has put forward Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a lawyer and former president of the Ludhiana Bar Association.

In total, 14 candidates are contesting in this bypoll. There are 1,75,469 registered voters in the Ludhiana West constituency.
