DNA Tests Help Identify 190 Victims of Ahmedabad Plane Crash; 159 Bodies Handed Over to Families

Authorities have successfully identified 190 victims of the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred on June 12 in Ahmedabad, with 159 bodies already returned to their families, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The London-bound Air India flight AI-171, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical complex shortly after takeoff, killing all but one person on board. The crash also claimed 29 lives on the ground, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.

Due to the severe damage and charring of many bodies, officials have been using DNA testing to identify the deceased. “As of this morning, we have matched 190 DNA samples and handed over 159 bodies to the families,” said Dr Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

The identification process continues for the remaining victims. Earlier, the Gujarat government had announced that DNA samples were collected from about 250 victims, including both passengers and those who died on the ground.

Authorities are working round the clock to complete the identification and ensure that the remains are returned to grieving families as quickly and respectfully as possible.
