PM Modi, Canadian PM Mark Carney Hold First Bilateral Meeting at G7; Call for ‘Win-Win Cooperation’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit and called for strengthening India-Canada relations through “win-win cooperation” across key sectors. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Carney assumed office in May 2025.

Describing India-Canada ties as “extremely important,” PM Modi said both nations should work together to achieve mutual growth and contribute to global welfare.

-“Under your leadership, I am sure we will work together in a positive way and take India-Canada relations forward,” he told Carney during the bilateral talks.

Modi noted that Canadian companies have made significant investments in India, while the Indian community has also played a key role in Canada’s economy.

-“We both stand for democratic values. Together, we can strengthen democracy and work for the welfare of all humanity,” he said.

Key Areas of Cooperation

In a post on X, PM Modi said:

-“Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit.”

He listed trade, energy, clean technology, space, critical minerals, fertilisers, and other strategic sectors as areas of untapped potential between the two nations.

-“India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom, and the rule of law,” Modi said, adding that the two countries should work together for global good.

Carney Welcomes Modi to G7

PM Carney, in his opening remarks, said it was a “great honour” to welcome Modi to the summit and highlighted India’s active role in global affairs since its participation in G7 began in 2018.

-“This is a testament to the importance of your country and the issues we are tackling together — from energy transition and AI to the fight against terrorism,” Carney said.

The Canadian leader acknowledged India’s global leadership, especially in energy security and technology, and expressed hope for stronger bilateral cooperation moving forward.

A Step Toward Resetting Ties

This meeting comes amid efforts to repair strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, which hit a low following the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Carney’s invitation to Modi for the G7 is being seen as a diplomatic reset and a gesture of goodwill from the new Canadian administration.

Modi, who is visiting Canada after nearly a decade, said the summit offers a valuable opportunity to promote global cooperation.

-“During our G20 presidency, we worked for the global good. Through the G7, we are extending that vision further.”

The meeting between the two leaders is being viewed as a crucial step in reviving bilateral ties and opening new avenues for strategic and economic collaboration.
