Captain Sumeet Sabharwal Laid to Rest in Mumbai After Ahmedabad Plane Crash

The mortal remains of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the pilot of the tragic Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad last week, were brought to Mumbai on Tuesday for his final rites.

Captain Sabharwal’s body arrived at Mumbai airport in the morning and was taken by his family to his home in Jal Vayu Vihar, Powai. There, friends, relatives, and local residents gathered to pay their respects to the 56-year-old pilot.

Prominent personalities, including businessman Niranjan Hiranandani and local MLA Dilip Lande, also visited his residence to offer condolences. Sabharwal’s father, Pushkaraj Sabharwal, was seen among those mourning the loss.

Later, a hearse carried his mortal remains to the Chakala electric crematorium for the final rites.

Captain Sabharwal was flying Air India flight AI-171 to London when it tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12. The plane, carrying 242 people on board, crashed into a medical complex, killing nearly everyone on board and 29 people on the ground. Only one person survived.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the flight took off at 1:39 PM from Runway 23 and had issued a MAYDAY call. However, there was no further response from the aircraft after that. Captain Sabharwal had over 8,200 hours of flying experience. He was accompanied in the cockpit by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 hours of flying time.

Captain Sabharwal is remembered not only as an experienced pilot but also as a humble and kind-hearted man. His loss has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.
