Air India Crash: 87 Victims Identified via DNA, 47 Bodies Handed Over to Families

Four days after the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 270 lives, officials on Monday confirmed that 87 victims have been identified through DNA matching, and 47 bodies have been handed over to their families.

Authorities are continuing DNA testing to identify the remaining victims, as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or severely damaged in the crash that occurred on June 12.

“Till now, 87 DNA samples have been matched, and 47 bodies have been handed over to the respective families. The deceased belonged to various parts of Gujarat, including Bharuch, Anand, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Kheda, Mehsana, Arvalli, and Ahmedabad,” said Dr Rajnish Patel, Additional Civil Superintendent.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating a London-bound flight, crashed into a medical college complex shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 pm. The flight had 242 people on board, of whom 241 perished, while one passenger miraculously survived.

Additionally, 29 individuals on the ground also lost their lives in the catastrophe, including five MBBS students from the complex into which the plane crashed.

Authorities continue to provide support to families and are coordinating the identification and release of remains. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by aviation authorities.
