A new survey by the CFA Institute shows that a large number of fresh graduates are worried about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) might affect their job opportunities. Over 70% of the graduates surveyed feel that AI will make it harder for them to get the jobs they want.
However, at the same time, 92% believe learning AI or automation tools will actually improve their chances of success in their careers.
This insight is part of the CFA Institute’s Global Graduate Outlook Survey 2025, which included over 9,000 fresh graduates worldwide — with 1,250 of them from India.
According to the report, Indian graduates are more worried than others globally about AI taking away job opportunities. Still, most of them (56%) believe that learning AI skills, along with soft skills like communication and adaptability, will give them a competitive edge.
The interest in AI-related careers is also rising — from 59% in 2024 to 63% this year, showing that students are becoming more aware and ready to adapt to the changing job market.
“AI is no longer optional for this generation. They know that it’s essential for professional growth,” said Arati Porwal, Senior Country Head, CFA Institute, India.
The finance sector continues to be the most preferred field for fresh graduates, with 38% saying they have confidence in it — up from 30% last year. IT comes next at 32%, followed by education at 21%.
Many graduates said finance seems like a stable and attractive field. Some pointed out its growing use of modern technologies like generative AI and blockchain. Dr Archana Singh from D Y Patil University, present at the report launch in Mumbai, said, “Finance is transforming with technology, and students need to be ready with the right skills.”
Interestingly, 40% of students said they plan to get a job immediately after graduation, while many are choosing professional certifications over postgraduate degrees. In fact, 68% believe certifications lead to better career growth.
The report also found that 85% of Indian graduates feel that certifications have directly improved their job opportunities or salaries.
In short, while AI brings new challenges, today’s graduates — especially in India — are aware that learning and adapting is the key to securing strong careers in the future.
