The death toll in the tragic Air India Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad has reached 274, including 241 passengers and crew members who were on board the plane and 33 people who were on the ground.
The Tata group, which owns Air India, has announced that it will give ₹1 crore as compensation to the families of all the victims — including the 33 people who lost their lives on the ground. These victims included doctors, students, hospital staff, and local residents from the Meghaninagar area near the airport.
Tata officials said they will also pay for the medical treatment of those who were injured and ensure they get full care and support. One person survived the crash.
The plane had crashed into the BJ Medical College campus and destroyed parts of the hostel. Tata has promised to help rebuild the damaged hostel building.
When asked if the group will offer jobs or other help to the families of the victims, a Tata official said it is still too early to say, as the full situation is still being assessed and investigations are ongoing.
In addition to the ₹1 crore from the Tata group, each deceased passenger is expected to receive around ₹1.5 crore more from insurance companies. Tata AIG General Insurance is the lead insurer for Air India, along with ICICI Lombard, New India Assurance, and other government insurers. The total payout will be covered by international reinsurers, led by AIG.
This gesture by the Tata group aims to bring some relief and support to the grieving families affected by this unimaginable tragedy.
