Popular YouTuber and ex-commercial pilot Gaurav Taneja, known to millions as Flying Beast, has shared a detailed technical explanation of what may have caused the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people. Speaking to Times Now, Taneja called it “every pilot’s nightmare” and pointed towards a likely dual engine failure soon after take-off.
“Modern aircraft systems give warnings even before take-off if there’s a major error,” he explained. “If this flight managed to take off, it suggests no serious alerts were given at that time.”
Taneja, who flew for over a decade and served as a captain with AirAsia, said once the aircraft leaves the runway, only non-critical alerts are suppressed until the plane reaches a safe height. “So, if there was no immediate warning and the gear was still down, that tells us something went wrong right after take-off. The pilots may not even have had time to retract the gear.”
He said the descent rate of about 400 feet per minute indicated the aircraft was losing height rapidly. “Pilots are trained to handle engine failures. But in cities like Ahmedabad, there’s very little room to make emergency landings. It’s not like flying over a desert or farmland. Buildings leave no option.”
Recalling his own training, Taneja said dual engine failure just after take-off is something rarely practiced in simulators. “It’s terrifying. In a simulator, the instructor ends the scenario just to let us breathe again. But in real life, there’s no reset button.”
He also ruled out certain technical failures. “It didn’t look like a stall or compressor stall. Even if one engine fails, aircraft are built to fly and land safely. So something very severe must have gone wrong.”
On the day of the incident, Taneja had posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Looks like a dual engine failure after take-off. Nothing short of a complete power loss can force a modern aircraft into that kind of sink rate.”
Taneja is widely followed for breaking down aviation issues in layman’s terms. In 2020, he made headlines after accusing AirAsia of compromising pilot safety norms. His video exposing these issues has over 10 million views.
As investigations continue, Taneja’s insights are helping the public better understand the complexities of aviation and the seriousness of the Ahmedabad crash.
