A state-level meeting of the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, Punjab, was held at Shaheed Sarwan Singh Cheema Bhawan in Garha, Jalandhar, under the leadership of Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala.
During the meeting, it was decided to urge both the state and Central governments not to implement plans to forcibly occupy Punjab’s fertile lands for urban estates and to take immediate steps to protect the state’s water resources.
Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala, the Sabha’s state president, said the Central government is trying to control Punjab’s river waters by denying states their rights. He also criticised the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, for not taking the river water issue seriously. He pointed out that canal water still doesn’t reach many tail-end villages and warned that Punjab’s rightful water share must not go to waste.
Speaking at the meeting, state general secretary Kulwant Singh Sandhu said the government’s push to build roads, colonies, and urban estates on agricultural land will not be tolerated. He warned that such actions could lead to unemployment among farmers and labourers and increase the threat of a future food crisis.
State press secretary Harnek Singh Gujjarwal added that efforts to form Jamhoori Kisan Sabha units in villages will be sped up, and farmers are showing strong support for the cause.
