Sarpanch Shot in Land Dispute, Tension in Tarn Taran’s Chela Village

Tension gripped Chela village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Wednesday after a violent clash over panchayat land led to the shooting of the village Sarpanch.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the accused, identified as Jajbir Singh, allegedly opened fire on the Sarpanch during a heated argument. The Sarpanch had confronted Jajbir for trying to illegally plow and take over community-owned land.

“He tried to occupy the land forcefully,” said one villager. “When the Sarpanch stopped him, Jajbir pulled out a gun and shot him in broad daylight.”

The Sarpanch was seriously injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Police Investigation Underway

Following the incident, a heavy police force was deployed in the area to prevent any further unrest. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation and are recording witness statements.

“A case has been registered, and efforts are on to arrest the accused. No one will be allowed to take the law into their hands,” a senior police official said.

Villagers Demand Action

Angry residents of Chela village are demanding strict action against the accused. “This is not just an attack on the Sarpanch, but on the law and our local governance system,” said a community elder.

Police have assured the villagers that the matter is being taken seriously and the accused will be brought to justice soon.
