The Punjab Cabinet on Tuesday approved a loan waiver worth ₹67 crore for 4,750 Dalit families. These families had taken loans from the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation but were unable to repay them.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said after the Cabinet meeting that these families had been struggling for years to get relief, but earlier governments did not solve their genuine problems.
Finance Minister Harpal Cheema had announced this loan waiver during the Budget speech for 2025–26 in March. It has now officially received Cabinet approval.
Cheema also mentioned that the loan repayment rate in the corporation is quite strong—morethan 84%.
