AAP MLA from Jalandhar, Raman Arora, was arrested today by the Vigilance Bureau on corruption charges. His arrest was expected for the past 10 days. The government said this action shows its strong stand against corruption. However, the Opposition called it a “political stunt” before the Ludhiana West by-election.
Even some AAP leaders are unhappy. MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap, a former police officer, questioned the arrest and said Arora was close to the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s family. Another AAP MLA, Manjinder Singh Lalpura, also raised concerns about a police officer but was later scolded by party leaders.
Sources said the party had received many complaints against Arora. Recently, his security was removed, and the party leaders stopped meeting him — signs that action was coming.
Party insiders believe the arrest helps AAP in two ways: it shows the public that they are serious about fighting corruption, even within their own party, and it warns other MLAs to follow party rules.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said his government has zero tolerance for corruption. He added that no one, whether in the ruling party or the Opposition, will be spared if found guilty.
