NGT Takes Action on Malwa Water Pollution Crisis After News Report

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken action on its own after reading a news report in *The Tribune* titled “Explainer: Why Malwa is facing polluted water crisis,” published on May 1.

The top NGT bench, including Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, and expert Dr. Afroz Ahmad, has asked for answers from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), and the Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Department. They must submit full reports at least one week before the next hearing on September 18.

The news report said that water in Punjab’s Malwa region, especially in areas like Ferozepur, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Fazilka, is becoming very polluted. This is because dirty water is flowing into the Sirhind Feeder Canal from the Harike Barrage.

The pollution is coming from the Sutlej River, which is contaminated by Buddha Nullah — a polluted stream that flows through Ludhiana and carries untreated industrial waste.

The NGT is now looking into the matter seriously to find solutions and fix accountability.
