Akal Takht Jathedar Urges Reopening of Kartarpur Corridor Amid Easing Tensions

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht, has urged the governments of India and Pakistan to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor, which has been closed since May 7 following Indian military action under Operation Sindoor.

The corridor, which allows Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the historic Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal, Pakistan, was shut down by India’s Bureau of Immigration citing security concerns. In contrast, Pakistan kept its side of the corridor open as a “goodwill gesture.”

Calling for the resumption of the corridor’s operations, Giani Gargaj said that tensions between the two countries had eased following a ceasefire, and with the situation returning to normal, the continued closure was unjustified.

“As the situation has normalised, the operations of Kartarpur Corridor should be resumed. Reopening it would further contribute to maintaining peace and harmony and strengthening mutual ties between the two neighbouring nations,” he said.

He emphasized that the region needs peace, progress, and mutual cooperation, rather than conflict. Giani Gargaj also praised national and international leaders who played a role in defusing tensions and promoting peace between India and Pakistan.
