AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Slams Own Government Over Amritsar Liquor Tragedy

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has strongly criticized his own party’s government over the recent spurious liquor tragedy in Amritsar, which has claimed 27 lives so far.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Amritsar (North) legislator alleged that those involved in the illicit liquor trade had become part of the ruling system. “The mafia-police nexus has a free run under this government. They have been made part of the regime and are now running the show,” he said.

He dismissed the suspension of lower-level police officers as an “eyewash” and demanded strict action against higher-ranking officers, including DIG-level officials, accusing them of protecting criminals during their earlier postings.

Addressing media at Bhangali village after meeting families of the victims, Pratap said criminals involved in illegal liquor and sand trade were still thriving. He challenged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to act as he had once demanded when in opposition.

“Back in 2020, during a similar tragedy under the Congress government, Mann had asked for a murder case to be registered against the then CM Amarinder Singh. Now 20 people have died in Mann’s own district, Sangrur, in March 2024. He should live up to his own words,” Pratap said.

He called for a special session of the Punjab Assembly to hold a serious discussion and find the root cause of the problem.
