Justice BR Gavai Sworn In as 52nd Chief Justice of India

Justice BR Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in Hindi during a short ceremony. Justice Gavai is the second person from the Dalit community to become the CJI, after Justice KG Balakrishnan.

He has replaced Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired in April. After taking the oath, Justice Gavai touched his mother’s feet to seek blessings and later paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Supreme Court premises before taking his seat in Court No. 1.

Born in Amravati, Maharashtra in 1960, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and became a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019 and will serve as CJI till November 23, 2025.

He has been part of several major decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370, scrapping of the electoral bonds scheme, and upholding the 2016 demonetisation move. He also led a bench that ruled no property should be demolished without prior notice. Justice Gavai is known for his significant contributions to constitutional matters and continues to handle key cases related to forests and wildlife.
