The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has announced financial help of ₹5 lakh each to the families of Sikhs killed in a recent terror attack in Poonch, Jammu. This decision was made during a meeting led by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami.
In the attack, which happened during Pakistan’s shelling in Poonch, four Sikhs — Amrik Singh (a raagi), Amarjeet Singh (retired soldier), Ranjit Singh (shopkeeper), and Ruby Kaur — lost their lives. The attack also damaged Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara.
Dhami said the SGPC will give any kind of help needed by the victims’ families during this difficult time.
In another matter, the SGPC discussed the mercy petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a prisoner on death row. Rajoana has written to the SGPC asking them to withdraw the petition for changing his sentence from death to life imprisonment. Before making a final decision, the SGPC will gather public opinion by consulting Sikh organisations, religious leaders, and legal experts. A meeting with Sikh judges and lawyers is planned for May 17 in Chandigarh.
After these discussions, a Panthic gathering will be held to take a decision based on the sentiments of the Sikh community.
The SGPC also announced it will install portraits of important Sikh figures and those who died in the Poonch attack, including Giani Mohan Singh, Dr Manmohan Singh, Baba Inderjit Singh Rakbewale, and others. Tributes were paid by reciting the Mool Mantra and Gur Mantra.
Additionally, SGPC plans to renovate the pathway from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee Langar Hall to Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai Sahib.
