11 Arrested in Amritsar Spurious Liquor Tragedy; Police Seize 600 Litres of Methanol

The Punjab Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the recent spurious liquor tragedy in Amritsar’s Majitha area, where at least 21 people died after drinking toxic liquor.

Among those arrested is the prime accused, Sahib Singh, along with chemical suppliers and liquor distributors. Two traders from Ludhiana and one person from Patiala were also caught. The Patiala police seized a truck carrying 600 litres of methanol — a dangerous chemical used to make illegal liquor — being transported from Delhi to Amritsar.

The Punjab government suspended Majitha DSP Amolak Singh and area SHO Avtar Singh for not doing their duty properly. A departmental inquiry has started against them.

Police found that Sahib Singh had ordered methanol from a Delhi-based firm, and shared this information with other police units. The methanol was bought from Transport Nagar in Delhi, and Navdeep Singh, who was travelling with the truck, was arrested.

Police say more arrests may happen soon. Two separate cases have been filed under murder, culpable homicide, and the Excise Act at Majitha and Kathunangal police stations.
