UN Security Council Urges India, Pakistan to De-Escalate Tensions

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a closed-door meeting on Monday to discuss rising tensions between India and Pakistan, especially after a recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians.

The meeting was requested by Pakistan and held in a consultation room, not the main chamber. Though no official statement was issued afterward, several diplomats called for peace and dialogue.

UN officials described the situation as “volatile” and stressed the need for de-escalation. Pakistan said its concerns were heard and claimed its objectives were “largely served.” Pakistan also raised issues like India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling water a “life source, not a weapon.”

India, however, dismissed the meeting’s impact. Former Indian diplomat Syed Akbaruddin said Pakistan’s effort to involve the UN had failed again.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern, calling the situation the “highest in years,” and warned against military confrontation. He condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and urged both nations to show restraint and engage in dialogue.
