Farmers Ask Centre to Keep Punjab Government Out of May 4 Meeting

The relationship between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and farmers in Punjab is getting worse. Farmers are already upset with AAP leaders after their protest was forcibly ended last month.

Now, two major farmer groups — Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) (Non-Political) — have made a new demand. They have asked the Central Government not to include Punjab state government representatives in the meeting scheduled for May 4.

In the earlier three meetings this year, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema had attended along with three Union Ministers — Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Agriculture), Pralhad Joshi (Consumer Affairs), and Piyush Goyal (Commerce).

The farmer leaders — Sarwan Singh Pandher, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, and Abhimanyu Kohar — have clearly said they will not attend the meeting if Punjab government officials are present. It is now up to the Central Ministers to decide whether to accept the farmers’ demand.
