Supreme Court Dismisses Punjab Govt’s Plea Against Bail to Bikram Singh Majithia

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected the Punjab Government’s request to cancel the bail given to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a drug case. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted him bail on August 10, 2022.

The court said that since Majithia has been cooperating with the investigation and has been out on bail for over two and a half years, it sees no reason to interfere. A bench led by Justice JK Maheswari dismissed the case.

The court also ordered Majithia not to speak to the media about the investigation and asked him to submit an affidavit within a week promising not to make any public statements. The anti-drug Special Task Force (STF) was also told not to make any public comments without the court’s permission.

However, the court gave the STF the right to request cancellation of Majithia’s bail if he tries to influence the investigation or witnesses.

Majithia is the brother-in-law of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and was named in a drug case based on a 2018 STF report and confessions given to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by other accused.
