India has taken strong action after a recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced these decisions after a high-level security meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Key Decisions:
-
Gunfight in Udhampur: A fight broke out between security forces and suspected terrorists in the Dudu-Basantgarh area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district. The operation is still ongoing.
-
Indus Waters Treaty Suspended: India has put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. This treaty, signed in 1960, decides how water from six rivers is shared between India and Pakistan. India will no longer follow the treaty until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism.
-
Pakistan Nationals Ordered to Leave: Pakistanis in India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme must leave within 48 hours. All visas under this scheme are now canceled.
-
Diplomats Expelled: Military advisers from Pakistan’s High Commission in Delhi have been asked to leave India within a week. India is also pulling its defence advisers from its High Commission in Pakistan.
-
Security Forces on High Alert: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has asked all security forces to remain highly alert. It promised that those behind the attack and their supporters will be punished.
-
World Support: Many countries have supported India and condemned the terror attack. The CCS thanked these countries for their strong words against terrorism.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India will take strong action, not just against those who carried out the attack, but also those who planned it behind the scenes.
