The fifth rank went to Aakash Garg, a computer science engineer from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, also with Sociology as his optional.

The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages — preliminary, main, and interview — to select candidates for India’s top civil services. The 2024 preliminary examination was conducted on June 16 last year. Out of 9,92,599 applicants, 5,83,213 candidates appeared for the exam. From these, 14,627 qualified for the written mains examination held in September. Of them, 2,845 candidates were shortlisted for the interview round.

This year’s top 25 candidates include 11 women and 14 men from diverse educational backgrounds, including engineering, humanities, science, commerce, medical science, and architecture. Their degrees come from some of India’s leading institutions such as IITs, NITs, VIT, JNU, the University of Delhi, and the University of Allahabad.

The candidates selected this year chose a wide range of optional subjects, including Anthropology, Commerce and Accountancy, Geography, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Public Administration, Sociology, and Tamil Literature.

In a significant note on inclusivity, the UPSC also recommended 45 candidates with benchmark disabilities, which includes 12 orthopedically handicapped, 8 visually challenged, 16 hearing impaired, and 9 with multiple disabilities.

The results reflect a diverse and competitive field of candidates, continuing the UPSC’s role as one of the most challenging and prestigious examinations in the country.
