On Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was told that Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh, who is in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), has not yet been given the new reasons for his continued detention.
His lawyer, senior advocate R.S. Bains, told the court that he hasn’t received instructions yet to challenge the latest (third) detention order. However, he said he would continue to push for a decision on the earlier case already being heard by the court. He also mentioned that the second detention order ended on Tuesday, and they were still waiting for details of the third one.
Bains added that the court needed to decide whether someone’s social media posts could legally be used as a reason to detain them.
Amritpal Singh and nine others were originally detained under the NSA. But the government has since cancelled the NSA against the other nine in March and April this year, while continuing to keep Amritpal in jail by extending his detention for a third time.
The State’s lawyer, senior advocate Anupam Gupta, told the court that most of the cases involving the other detainees are now closed because their detention periods have ended.
The court will hear the case again in July.
