Punjab Police have arrested two men for allegedly being involved in a plot to attack Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The plot was discovered after screenshots from a WhatsApp group named “Waris Punjab De Team” surfaced on social media. The group is believed to support Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
The screenshots raised alarm across security agencies, leading to an investigation. The FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime police station in Moga. The arrested individuals have been identified as Balkar Singh from Khanna and Pawandeep Singh from Khote village in Moga. Another suspect, Lakhdeep Singh Sardargarh from Bathinda, has also been named in the case.
The police said that the group had over 600 members and was reportedly involved in discussing foreign funding, the purchase of arms, and sharing inflammatory content online. The members also allegedly planned attacks on key political and religious figures including Amit Shah, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Bikram Majithia, and Parminder Singh Talwara, a known associate of late activist Deep Sidhu.
The FIR includes serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the IT Act. The suspects were reportedly protesting against the extension of Amritpal Singh’s detention under the National Security Act and were using the group to incite unrest.
Meanwhile, SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia released audio clips in which Amritpal Singh allegedly admits to having links with gangsters, involvement in dacoities, and mentions looted gold and cash. In the recordings, Amritpal also talks about his family’s political connections and assets in Delhi. Majithia accused him of being a criminal disguised as a religious preacher and demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the matter. He also criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for staying silent, questioning whether the authorities were waiting for someone to be harmed.
Security around the political leaders mentioned in the chats has now been tightened, and national security agencies are monitoring the case closely.
